Roger Abbott and Don Ferguson Honoured with Easter Seals' Highest Award

Toronto, ON, June 8, 2007 – Roger Abbott and Don Ferguson of CBC’s Royal Canadian Air Farce have been recognized with the Yvonne Alexander Award for their outstanding support of The Easter Seal Society of Ontario. The award was presented at Easter Seals’ Annual General Meeting held yesterday. The Yvonne Alexander Award is Easter Seals’ most distinguished volunteer award and is named in honour of the late wife of the former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Lincoln Alexander.

“For the past 24 years Roger and Don have supported Easter Seals and children with physical disabilities in a multitude of ways,” said Carol Lloyd, President and CEO of Easter Seals. “Each and every time we have called on Roger and Don for assistance, they have been there in spades, ready, willing and able to do whatever was needed for the benefit of the organization and the children we serve.”

As long-time champions of children with physical disabilities, their support has been most visible as hosts of the annual Easter Seals Telethon. They have also given considerable personal time to promote the cause by participating in media events as well as speaking at or hosting numerous staff and volunteer conferences, retreats, and awards dinners. However, their support goes well beyond promotion and awareness. In 2004, they generously established the Roger Abbott and Don Ferguson Easter Seals’ Award for Achievement in the Performing Arts, an annual bursary to recognize the accomplishments of an Easter Seal youth in the area of performing arts.

The Yvonne Alexander Award was established to recognize exemplary volunteers who demonstrate quiet strength and support behind outstanding achievement. The individuals’ efforts must demonstrate both quality and integrity of performance.

2007 marks the 85th anniversary of The Easter Seal Society, Ontario. Easter Seals provides financial assistance for essential mobility equipment, such as walkers and wheelchairs, to families who require additional help and support in raising a child with a physical disability. Easter Seals also offers fully accessible summer camp and funding for children with physical disabilities to attend other recreational programs.
