Family Gives Back at Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay

Toronto, ON, June 9, 2010—Rebecca and Stephen Kennedy have 51/2 year-old twins, Alex and Daniel. Alex, who came into world 2 minutes after Daniel, has Cerebral Palsy (CP). Originally from Vancouver Island, the Kennedy’s have no family in Ontario and rely on their friends and organizations like Easter Seals Ontario for support. On Father’s Day weekend, June 19th and 20th, the Kennedy’s will be participating in the Money Mart Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay at Toronto’s Coronation Park across from the CNE.

This event dubbed ‘Party with a Purpose’ features teams of people continuously jogging or walking a 2.5 kilometre course for 24 hours straight – all in support of children and youth with physical disabilities.

The Kennedy family knows first hand the importance of support for families with kids with physical disabilities. Like many families helped by Easter Seals, the Kennedy’s are operating on one income, and it’s not easy to afford essential equipment like a $1,000 bath seat, let alone cover the cost of a power wheelchair. The Kennedy’s very first family vacation took place last summer at Easter Seals Camp Woodeden, on the outskirts of London, Ontario.

“Easter Seals has helped our family so much, finally, we felt ready to give back,” said Rebecca Kennedy about their decision to form a team and fundraise for the Money Mart Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay.

During Toronto’s 24 Hour Relay’s 19-year history, individual social clubs, sports groups, companies and their corporate teams have generated more than $7.5 million for Easter Seals kids. Money raised assists families of kids with physical disabilities with the purchase of costly mobility equipment and communication devices. Easter Seals also owns and operates two fully accessible camp properties and is recognized as an industry leader in providing specialized recreation programs for kids with physical disabilities at Easter Seals camps.
